Stopped into a private liquor store last night to look for some Talisker 8. No luck, but the kind young man checked the provincial system for what can be ordered from an agent. The last one he mentioned sent my eyes out of their sockets. Talisker 18. He said there are 2 cases (12 bottles) available to purchase.

The employee that does the purchasing for the store will be in Monday at 10am. So will I. I’m prepared to buy 2 bottles to sweeten the deal and convince him to buy a case. Who am I kidding, I just want two bottles.
If there are any Canucks interested, let me know
. I’ll ship, no shit.

... that’s tempting as hell since I can’t get Talisker here. Potentially road-trip worthy, especially with personal use duty exemption.

It’s
phenomenal
stuff. The 18 years rounds everything off, but because it’s Talisker it still has a bang of flavors. If Ron Swanson knew any better, this is what he’d be having.
As far as I know it’s not available in any other provin
ces. You say
no
Talisker
at all where you are?
Where are you, Sask?

I’m down in Ohio. Our liquor setup is completely bugfuck insane. Basically, the state has an absolute monopoly on liquor purchasing and wholesale, and it’s rampantly corrupt. So unless you’re buddies with the state guy, your liquor store won’t be able to get shit , while the guy who does bribe the liquor wholesale agent can get them to order six cases of Suntory Toki.
And that’s not a hypothetical. The liquor agency not ten minutes from my house has tried to order one case of Suntory Toki only to be told to fuck off the state doesn’t have any. Meanwhile, another licensed agency literally got six cases of it after they sold out of one.
The hilarious part is that it’s “illegal” to bring more than 1L of liquor into Ohio for personal use, too. Not “illegal without paying tax,” just straight up “nope, illegal.”

Didn’t expect an American to not be able to get a single Talisker. Wow, that’s messed up.
Meanwhile, another licensed agency literally got six cases of it after they sold out of one.
That’s messed up.
There’s a ‘board’ here
that’s government owned and operated. They buy from agents and sell
to the g
overnment stores and the private stores.
Anyone can order anything that’ s held by an agent. Y ou just need to go to the desk and ask about a “speculative product”. If an agent has it, you need to buy a whole case. In the case of the Talisker it would be roughly $1400. :-(x I hope to convince the private store purchaser to order a case for their store to sell. ;-)x

It’s entirely possible there’s someone with Talisker, but, ‘liquor agency’ is a misleading name because they’re private stores. Beholden to the fucked up state monopoly. Oh, and they’re not allowed to even list what they have online. (Ohio is just fucked up. It’s illegal to home brew beer that doesn’t use a state approved recipe too.)
The really truly massively stupid shit is that not only can the state liquor agent fuck you over, the whole ordering system is stupid. Apparently you can order a single bottle or clean out the stock. No matter what it is. So yes, you can order single bottles of that godawful Kamchatka shit.
Which, by the way, was the top selling liquor in Ohio. For decades . Because the state also sets the prices. And you can request something, but unless the agent likes you and the state liquor board approves it, you’re SOL.
So I can’t get my Balcones Baby Blue (which is a truly surprising ‘different’ whisky, highly recommended,) but I can get Firestone & Robertson TX Blended (which is ... passable .) In Texas, the TX Blended is about $30. Here? $55. Yet my Jameson’s Caskmates Stout Edition was $29.99 (same as elsewhere) and my Suntory Toki is $32 ( cheaper than everywhere else.)
Such a total shitshow.

It gets better in civilized countries. The US is not a civilized country, and Ohio is not a civilized state.
The only improvement we’ve had in the past 50 years is that in 2016 , it became legal to possess non-wine beverages with an alcohol by volume of 12% to 40%.
Yes, you are reading that correctly. You could not have any beer over 12% or any liquor below 80 proof.
This was offset by the shitheads in Columbus railroading through a bunch of regressive, terroristic crap along with reducing the number of stores allowed to sell normal proof spirits and an absolute 21% ABV cap on wine.
